No sabía cómo escucharlo.
Silence
Written by Laura Riquett
I had often heard that silence has more to say than the constant noise we live in.
I didn’t know it until I experienced it.
A career in the fashion industry, where spotlights, runways, applause, fabrics, machines, and the press become part of your everyday life, can create so much noise that hearing your own voice becomes almost impossible. In the middle of the adrenaline and demands of running and leading a fashion business, there is very little space left to pause and reflect.
When all that noise gradually began to fade, an overwhelming silence arrived. I didn’t know how to listen to it. And many times, I wanted to turn it off.
But how do you turn off silence?
Without realizing it, I was asking the wrong questions. I didn’t need to turn it off. I needed to learn how to listen to it. There was so much within that silence that I needed to hear in order to finally reconnect with my own inner voice.
Slowing down. Learning new things. Focusing on what is simple. In my particular case, stepping away from everything I knew. That included friends and family.
Moving to a new country, with a new language, where I knew no one, gave me back something I had lost amidst all that noise: my own voice.
At that moment, taking such a radical step led me down a necessary path. But today I understand that silence can also be created within everyday life, if we learn to seek it.
Perhaps that radical step in my journey was necessary for me to understand, today, everything that silence has to say.
